You can be stalked by a shadow.

Is Morocco safe?

You might as well ask: "Is Europe a safe place"? "Are the USA safe for travelers"?

What, where, how, who, with who, when, and are we talking impressions, actual numbers and what sort of numbers?

Some find the gathering of two 18-year olds with a baseball cap frightening. Others walk alone through a 'hood' in the Bronx, happily alone and after midnight.

Two elements make of Morocco a country that is just as safe as any:

1. Contra: a crippling economy can make some more creative when it comes to thinking about ownership rights.

2. Pro: At the other hand, good old social control is alive and kicking.

l'Art de vivre

A french expression that means: the art of living.

You have empathy for the person before you, and know how to win hearts, as well as to keep away the wrong ones.

Why do we have to dedicate a page to this question?

"Tanger Danger"

A whole page about safety and all that is the fault of one single song:

Tanger, Danger (*)
Marrakech, Harnakesh
Agadir, rien à dire
Essaouira, ça ira!

Whoever started with that refrain for children, must have been from Essaouira!

Tangier is not more dangerous than any city of 600.000 inhabitants in your own country.

Safe for women?

The question comes back time and time again: Is Morocco safe for female travelers?

You are going to be fine. In the 10 years we traveled in and to Morocco, we met tons of female travelers, on their own or not.

True, often it was their almost automatical caution that kept them from the wish to discover that deserted alley there, or that made them not ask for directions to just anyone but to policemen (who are often very cool!) or officials only.

And, also true, carrying a backpack, under the hot sun, in practical travel clothing, with your pleasant smile of independence...

Some men might ask: "Is she dangerous"?

Normality

Normality does it.

Sure, you can dress up to the nines, in designer clothes, with your Nikon and iPod for whole the world to see...

While not forgetting to carry a tourist guide which you open at every corner while you signal: "O, I am so new here, and so lost".

Attitude

You have the moves. You pull your suitcase behind you and you know exactly where you are going and life is beautiful. Always helps.

To attract people with the same spirit. And that goes the world around.

In 1 phrase

Do not do what you would not do at home, and do not go where you would not think of going in your own country.

As a tourist you are a tad more attractive - after all, you can afford this trip, and you must have saved for souvenirs - but common sense goes a long way.

(*) Tanger means danger
Marrakech - to be harassed
Agadir, nothing to tell
But Essaouira, that's ok!
