TANGER-TARIFA

Seperated by 31 kilometers or 19 miles, 45 minutes by Fast Ferry (there is no slow one) and 12 centuries of friction.

The Ferries

From TARIFA, the ferry leaves mañana. Or an average of 9 times per day starting at 7 AM until 11 PM.

From TANGER, the ferry leaves when the storm is over. Or from 6 AM until midnight.

Ferries are very punctual, unless they are not, but small, modern and comfortable. Snackbar, snack machines, tax free shops, interplanetary cell phone connection, so you do not have to go dolphin spotting again.

The ferry company is FRS, and you can visit their website at www.frs.es

How much does it cost?

For a one way ticket you pay 45€ and for a return return ticket 81€ per person (July 2009).

A normal car comes at 118€.

Waiting in Tarifa

It might mean you will have to spend some time in Tarifa, before or after your ferry trip.

You are lucky, because you could ask yourself the question: if you are in Tarifa, why would you want to take a ferry to elsewhere?

This is a lovely, lovely, lovely town.

Only some 30 kms away from the Costa del Sol, but it's a different world. One of backpackers and surf people so glamourous you have to wear shades.

If you are not into surf, this is a small town to lazy about and go for a cocktail at a cool lounge bar, or explore the tiny music and surf wear shops.

Where to park your car

In TARIFA: from where ever you come, just drive into Tarifa. Always straight ahead. Through the whole town.

Until the road makes a sharp turn to the left. Now you can start looking for a parking spot. You will see two parking lots at your right hand side.

These are for free, and in general Tarifa is a safe town.

In TANGER: You don't park your car. You take it with you.

Tarifa Weather

Summer (July-August) is very hot, but being located right on the divide between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, the heat is very bearable.

In winter though... the winds!! The Winds that have turned Tarifa into the Nec Plus Ultra of surf and kitesurf in summer.

And, in winter, into the town with the highest suicide rate of Spain.

The summer is... lovely. All along the 10 km long beach, and all along the Costa de la Luz, there are small parties on the beach, as this one on YouTube.

Facts about Tarifa

Southernmost town of mainland Europe. (Yes, that is not Gibraltar).

Gave its name to the word Tariff, known the world over. It was the first port to charge merchants for the use of its docks. Moroccans will say that the word comes from the Arabic ta'rif.

Spaniards will claim that the Arabic word ta'rif stems from... at which point Arabs will say that Spain has to stop the occupation of Ceuta and Melilla, after which a war breaks out over the 4 square feet island of Perejil, after which Colin Powell has to come over, and then we all build a chunnel together.

18.000 inhabitants.

Got famous in the USA when Jemma Bush almost had her cell phone stolen on Tarifa Beach in 2004.

Hip Kitesurf City

As the Kitesurf capital of Spain, Tarifa boasts more surf and surf wear shops than any other town in Europe.

It also means it has become something as an epicentre of Hipness.

Tarifa has its own clothing labels such as Sons of the Desert and especially El Niño, a surf brand of youth and non-conformism. Its logo, a little ghost, has become something of an icon for young water sport enthousiasts.

In restaurants such as Souk Restaurant, a very popular and trendy place to eat or just have tea, recordings are made of this typical "tarifa lounge", a fusion of ambient with arabic influences.

Ana Torroja, previously the singer of Mecano and now a solo-artist, forever eternal for songs as "Hijo de la luna" and "Mujer contra mujer", is rumoured to spend whole summers here.

And that is something, because she is the nouvelle cuisine or 1968 Chardonnay in the MC Donalds of music. A real artist, like Rosanna, or Manu Chao or Leonard Cohen.

Victoria Beckham goes to Marbella.

It's a thin line

It's a thin line between ES and MA, between country code +34 and +212.

The majority of bombers of the Madrid trains came from Tangier.

Then again, Spain sucked away all resources and sympathy during decades of colonial rule, and do not even start the debate about Ceuta or Melilla.

Then again the Moors were where they were not supposed to be, and we still have to live with all those patios and mosaic and strange sounds in the flamenco.

Neighbours We don't speak spanish We don't speak whatever you speak there

What do you name a garbage bin with an antenna? Radio Morocco.

How do you call a Spaniard on a bycicle? A thief.

Outdoors all is sunny. Indoors there are grievances and frustration.

You come here because you can't fix your own country!! How can I if you crippled it so thoroughly??

It is a frontier situation. It is no miracle that the southern Spaniards were the most staunch catholics of Europe.

As the Flemish are the most staunch defenders of the dutch language, and the Austrians the first to elect a very right-wing government.

He or she who is at the border of cultures, is the man that feels he has to block the door.

A new Era

When in 2003 Zapatero was elected president of the Spanish Government, his first visit to a foreign country was to Morocco.

With neighbours as France and Portugal, this was seen as a very clear signal.

Relations have been improving ever since.
