Budget hotels can be the most romantic

Hotel Bristol

There is one low budget hotel where I must have stayed like 20 times, and that always proved to have availability as well as to be safe and clean.

This is Hotel Bristol at a 5 minute walk from the Ferry Port. Near to everything, this house as a rock is always quiet and safe, and since the redecoration of 2008 it also received 3 stars.

The bedlinen is clean, and each room comes with a private bathroom. The rates vary around 25€ per night per double room (last time I checked... but the rate goes up).

From the Ferry Port, walk straight ahead, with the sea on your left, and then take the 3td street on your right. You will find Hotel Bristol 300 meters further on your right.

Hotels Online

In my experience, hotels in Tangier are still not very used to the Internet.

Even the hotels who market themselves online, with beautiful websites, can not be found online... or if you find them, can still make you wait a week before replying to your Email, if not longer.

Or simply never see your Email at all. And this also applies to the luxury hotels!!!

Budget Hotels

There are very, very many very low budget hotels in Tangier. You will find them from the sea boulevard up to the roads leading from that boulevard to the Medina, and in the souks.

Obviously, very low budget, or rates starting from 10€ per night, mean a very low degree of comfort as well.

This type of hotels can not be booked online, in most cases not even per telephone as they are not marketed at all. But they usually always have availability, no matter at what time you arrive - with the exception of the months of June, July and August when the whole of Tangier is fully booked.

Maison Berbari

If you have a higher budget for just one night, then definitely try Guesthouse Berbari in Asilah.

A true and hip country guesthouse that is totally out of the ordinary.

Via Málaga?

Then these two hotels in Málaga city make up a very good basis:

HOTEL VENECIA, a pleasant 3 star hotel, extremely central.

HOSTAL LA PALMA in the same neighbourhood, ideal for backpackers or those traveling on a very tight budget.

Backpackers

Not even 4 or 5 years ago this was a real 'backpackers city'.

A "dump" for some, about intrigue and magic for others.

There are still public showers in the Medina, for those staying in a very low budget place, but in general Tangier is now corporate city, with most of the tourists hanging around the luxury hotels at the Sea front.

Where?

Very low budget hotels are everywhere. Just walk into the souks. If your backpack is heavy, go straight from the Ferry Port to the Kasbah - at the exit of the Port turn to your right, to your right again and walk uphill.

When?

Now. And that means: now. Tangier is changing so quickly it is almost as if the city of 4 years ago has vanished.

Another 2 years and the city is simply not of interest any longer to backpackers or anyone wishing a tiny bit of adventure or a 'real' Moroccan experience.

That is: one out of the handbooks. Obviously it just takes you a 10 minute cab drive to be out of the tourist zone, in the outskirts of the city or the small towns in the region.
