Where is Tangier? Well, here, at the most north western tip of Morocco, where the African and European continents almost touch. Consequently Tangier is the most northern of all African cities, and the closest one to mainland Europe. Just 14 kilometers or some 9 miles, that is the distance between Europe and Africa, making this straight even more narrow than the channel between the UK and France. Because of this location, Tangier can be very festive in July and August, when many of the 1,5 million Moroccans living in Europe pass through Tangier on their way to their relatives on their annual holiday. Distances in Tangier The Ferry Port is in the city itself. From the exit of the Port it is a 10 minute walk to both the Petit Socco and the Kasbah. It's a 30 minute walk to the Boulevard in the New Town. The new train station of Tangier is located 2 km from the city centre. It will take you just a few minutes in a taxi. If you can share your taxi with other travellers, your rate might be a lot less than the usual 50 Dhs. The caves of Hercules are located at 14 Km west of Tangier and can be reached only by taxi.

Located on the African continent, you will rarely hear Moroccan's refer to themselves as 'Africans' - or it can provoke debates. And this is no surprise. After all, throughout the ages Morocco has been and still is much more seperated from the rest of Africa, than of the continent of Europe. 15 kilometers of sea or ocean are easy to cross, but hundreds of miles of desert are a completely different thing. It is exactly this splendid isolation, with natural borders in north (sea), west (ocean), south (desert) and east (mountains), that has made it possible that Morocco could develop such a specific culture. A Chunnel? There are talks about a chunnel under the Gibraltar strait, forever linking Morocco with Spain. Obviously this will bring the traffic between the two countries to a higher level, which is one of the reasons why Tangier is preparing to become the second corporate city of Morocco.
