WHERE IS TANGIER?

Well, here, at the most north western tip of Morocco, where the African and European continents almost touch.

Consequently Tangier is the most northern of all African cities, and the closest one to mainland Europe.

Just 14 kilometers or some 9 miles, that is the distance between Europe and Africa, making this straight even more narrow than the channel between the UK and France.

Because of this location, Tangier can be very festive in July and August, when many of the 1,5 million Moroccans living in Europe pass through Tangier on their way to their relatives on their annual holiday.

SPLENDID ISOLATION

Located on the African continent, you will rarely hear Moroccan's refer to themselves as 'Africans' - or it can provoke debates.

And this is no surprise. After all, throughout the ages Morocco has been and still is much more seperated from the rest of Africa, than of the continent of Europe.

15 kilometers of sea or ocean are easy to cross, but hundreds of miles of desert are a completely different thing.

It is exactly this splendid isolation, with natural borders in north (sea), west (ocean), south (desert) and east (mountains), that has made it possible that Morocco could develop such a specific culture.

To and from Spain

The fastest way to get to Spain is to cross the Gibraltar Strait directly to the tiny ferry port of Spain's southernmost town, Tarifa.

The Ferry takes approximately 45 minutes. Further east, there is the humongeous port of Algeciras, in the same bay as Gibraltar.

Ferries from Algeciras take between 1,5 and 2,5 hours. You can check ferry times from Tarifa by going to the website of FRS.

When passing by Tarifa, do not forget to visit this lovely and laidback town, the European capital of windsurf.
